Boko Haram Leader: We Will Not Release Kidnapped Girls Unless Our Brothers Are Released from Prison

On May 12, 2014, Abubakar Shekau, the leader of the Nigerian terrorist group Boko Haram, released a video message in which he discussed the kidnapping of 276 Christian girls on April 14. Shekau demanded the release of imprisoned "brothers" in exchange for the release of those among the kidnapped girls who did not convert to Islam. Later in the video, some of the kidnapped girls were shown reciting Surat Al-Fatiha, the first chapter of the Koran.

Following are excerpts from the video, which was posted on the Internet:

Abubakar Shekau: Brothers in faith, this is a message about those girls. I took them – we took them – from the Western schools. The world's tyrants talk about them. Obama, François Hollande, [Nigerian President] Jonathan, and all the tyrants of the world talk about them. Allah Akbar. Allah is greater and stronger than everything. This is strange indeed. When you hear what I want to say, you will surely start crying, oh Obama.

These girls, who you make such a fuss about, have converted to Islam. They have converted to Islam.

They have converted. They have embraced Islam, and have left Christianity.

We will not let these girls go until you release our brothers from your prisons. Four or five years ago, you captured our brothers, who are now in your prisons, where you do many things to them, yet you dare talk about these girls. We shall not let them go before you let our brothers go. We shall not let them go before you let our brothers go.

I am talking about the girls who have not converted to Islam. As for the Muslims among them, they are our sisters now.

Group of girls: "I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Satan. In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate, All praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds, the Merciful, the Compassionate, Master of the Day of Judgment. You alone do we worship, and You alone we seek for help. Guide us to the right path, the path of those upon whom You have bestowed Your blessings, not those who have incurred Your wrath, nor those who have gone astray." Amen.
