According to a recent report in Al-Arabiya, the Afghan Taliban's media operation has an annual budget of 25 million Afghanis, or about $323,000. Two of its lead Afghanistan-based spokesmen, Zabihullah Mujahid and Qari Yousaf Ahmadi, who are authorized to talk to journalists, issue statements, and use Twitter, use Afghanistan-based phone numbers to use WhatsApp. The group uses Viber and Telegram, as well as WhatsApp, to communicate in English, Pashto, Dari, Arabic, and Urdu. The Taliban began using Twitter in 2011, and Mujahid, who said "Now many diplomats from various countries seek an audience with our leaders and follow us on social media," today has more than 42,000 Twitter followers.
