June 12, 2023

The Australian neo-Nazi and white supremacist movement is growing in size and influence, both within the borders of Australia and internationally. In recent months prominent figures and groups within the movement have made international headlines, and the movement as a whole is becoming increasingly brazen and public. Prominent figures are reaching new, younger audiences through new platforms including TikTok, and are radicalizing a new generation of white supremacist and neo-Nazi extremists.[1]

At the core of the neo-Nazi and white supremacist movements are individuals who propagate these ideologies. They often have charismatic personalities that draw supporters and play a key role in their recruitment strategies. The organizations that these figures represent are central to their operations. They provide the structure that supports the propagation of their ideologies and facilitate their activities online and in person. The geographical distribution of these groups and figures is another crucial aspect of understanding this movement. This report identifies Victoria, especially Melbourne and its suburbs, as the main hub for neo-Nazi activities. However, several key figures and organizations were also found to operate in other states and territories.

Current affairs and issues which have gained salience within the neo-Nazi and white supremacist movement in Australia have become recurring topics in online and in person activism. The main issues include the political campaign to enshrine a consultative body to government that would represent Indigenous Australians (a.k.a. "The Voice"), immigration to Australia, COVID-19, LGBTIQA+ events, and anti-vilification laws targeting the Australian neo-Nazi and white supremacist movement.
