On October 7, 2023, militant Palestinian groups led by Hamas broke through the Gaza–Israel barrier and forced their way through Gaza border crossings, entering nearby Israeli settlements and homes. On October 10, the death toll had risen to more than 1000 Israelis, most of them civilians. Another 3,400 were reported wounded. President Macron of France, Chancellor Scholz of Germany, Prime Minister Meloni of Italy, Prime Minister Sunak of the United Kingdom, and President Biden of the United States expressed united support for Israel, and condemnation of Hamas. While most of the public and political parties in both France and Italy also condemned Hamas, fascist elements in France and Italy voiced pro-Hamas, pro-Syrian, anti-Israeli and also antisemitic positions.
