Prior to Morocco taking on France in the 2022 World Cup semi-final in Qatar, white supremacists, ultranationalists, and neo-Nazis throughout Europe disseminated anti-Moroccan and anti-Muslim messaging. Such content included calls for anti-Moroccan violence, deportations of non-white, non-Christian populations, and claims that Moroccans, and Arabs more broadly, would riot in France following the game, in addition to depicting stolen Moroccan flags or other memorabilia. Online users also called for a larger-scale racial war in Europe.
A social media post by a European neo-Nazi account depicted a destroyed Paris and forecasted violence following the semi-final match between Morocco and France.
The following report covers content by European white supremacist, ultranationalist, and neo-Nazi accounts preceding and following the France-Morocco semi-final game at the 2022 Qatar World Cup.
European Neo-Nazis, White Supremacists, And Ultranationalists Espouse Racism Against Moroccans, Call For Race War
A Czech extremist group shared a photo depicting three people stepping on a Moroccan flag, while performing the three-finger ultranationalist hand gesture. The post caption stated: "10.12.2022, French lads with stolen flags from Moroccan fans." The post was shared days before the FIFA World Cup 2022 semi-final game between France and Morocco.
A neo-Nazi website published an article expressing hope for riots in connection with the World Cup semi-final match. An excerpt from the article reads: "If, by any chance, you're wondering why I want total chaos, the reason is very simple: I want to get the eternal Gaul [i.e., native French] out of his unshakable naivety [...] I expect Moroccans [in France] not to disappoint... So I want them to burn cars, loot businesses, rip up French flags after tearing them from masts, beat up random fools, fight with the cops, shout 'Allah Akbar' on the Champs-Élysées…"
A neo-Nazi social media account published a post regarding the riots that took place in France after the match between France and Morocco. The post includes two videos, one showing a group of soccer fans, apparently Moroccans, assaulting a driver. The post argues that if a Russian found himself in a similar situation, he would have allowed himself to be pulled out of the car and beaten or he might have gone to prison. The post concludes: "There will be a race war in Europe in the future, it is inevitable."
A white supremacist shared online a video showing a French man being assaulted, apparently by a Moroccan, after the match between France and Morocco, which France had won. Text on the video reads: "Already one dead." The channel wrote: "The hunt for the French was on last night [after the match]."
A Hungarian neo-Nazi social media account shared a photo of a white girl holding up a piece of paper with a message reading: "Black 'people' are not French!" The channel wrote: "This stands for the [World Cup] match of the two African teams," in reference to the French and Moroccan teams. The channel also added emojis of a monkey and a banana.
