On July 3, 2023, Al-Zallaqa, the official media outlet of Al-Qaeda's affiliate in the African Sahel, Jama'at Nusrat Al-Islam Wal-Muslimeen (the Group for Support of Islam and Muslims – GSIM), released two statements claiming separate attacks against Russian Wagner Group forces in Mali's Macina region and Burkinabe troops in an armed ambush in Burkina Faso's Bam Province.
"Wagner Group Helicopter Downed In Macina"
GSIM claimed its fighters downed a helicopter "belonging to the Russian Wagner Group." No further information was released about the date and weapons used in the alleged attack.[1]
"Nearly 100 Burkinabe Troops Killed In Ambush"
According to the second statement, On June 26, GSIM fighters ambushed a large convoy of the Burkinabe armed forces on the road between Jibu and Kongoussi, in the country's central-north region, killing nearly 100 soldiers and wounding dozens.
"The mujahideen torched over 30 vehicles and seized 15 vehicles, 65 motorcycles, 12 PK rifles, seven RPG launchers, 13 pistols, 53 Kalashnikov rifles, 298 magazines and mortar projectiles, and an assortment of ammunition and equipment," added the statement.[2]
Spoils Seized
In a subsequent post, Al-Zallaqa released five photos documenting the alleged spoils seized after the ambush attack.[3]
