On February 21, 2024, Islamic State Mozambique Province released photos documenting its attacks on Christian villages in Chiure, Cabo Delgado.[1]
According to ISIS weekly newsletter Al-Naba’, issue 431, the group claimed its fighters had launched 27 attacks in Mozambique, killing 70 Christians and soldiers, and destroying 500 churches, houses, and governmental buildings.[2]
Photos Show Fighters Destroying Cross
Photos showed fighters destroying what appear to be churches, houses, and schools, setting fire to some of them. Other images showed fighters taking down a cross from on top of a building. Another shows one fighter destroying a cross on the ground with an axe.
Pro-ISIS Poster Incites More Attacks On Christians
On February 22, 2024, the pro-Islamic State (ISIS) Al-'Adiyat Media outlet released a poster praising recent claimed attacks by the group's affiliates in Niger and Mozambique against Christians.[3]
Titled "The Return of the Islamic Conquests in Africa," the poster featured images released earlier by official ISIS media. The images showed a Nigerien soldier and Christian civilians killed by ISIS fighters in Niger and Mozambique.
The text reads: "The Christians in Africa have only tasted some of the vengeance and there is still vengeance remaining. They have only paid part of a long, heavy bill that awaits them for what they have perpetrated against our Muslim brethren there."
