On July 27, 2011, Al-Sahab media company published a seven-minute video by new Al-Qaeda leader Ayman Al-Zawahiri; in it, Al-Zawahiri addressed the Syrians' current fight against the regime of President Bashar Al-Assad. Al-Zawahiri saluted the Syrian rebels, repeatedly referring to them as mujahideen, and calling them an example for the rest of the Muslim Ummah for their perseverance in fighting their tyrannical regime and for their sacrifice. He urged the rebels to maintain their fight and stand fast against Assad, whom he referred to as a leader of a criminal gang and of the traitors, and said that he had relinquished the Golan Heights and aided the U.S. in its fight against Islam.
