Shock at the condition of the Israeli hostages Ohad Ben Ami, Or Levy, and Eli Sharabi, who were released from Hamas captivity on February 8, 2025, was expressed not only by Israelis but also by liberal Arab journalists and writers. They strongly condemned Hamas for starving the hostages, who were captured in the October 7, 2023 attack, and compared their treatment to the treatment of Jews at the hands of the Nazi regime.
Some of the writers criticized the cynical show staged by Hamas upon releasing the hostages and commented that the organization's operatives did not look like people who had suffered a "genocide" or "starvation" in Gaza. One writer also directed his criticism at the Red Cross, stating that those who collaborated with the Nazis by turning a blind eye to the condition of the Jews in the concentration camps are now cooperating with Hamas. Another claimed that Israel will eventually take its revenge on Hamas, Qatar and Turkey for the "Nazi crimes" committed against its citizens.
This report provides examples of this criticism.
"Hamas Treated The Hostages The Same Way The Nazis Treated The Jews "
In a post on her X account, liberal Egyptian journalist Dalia Ziada shared a photo of the three Israeli hostages alongside a photo of Holocaust survivors in 1945, and wrote "never again!"[1]
Amjad Taha, a commentator residing in the UAE, wrote in English: "Hamas treated hostages the same way the Nazis treated the Jews, starving them and keeping them in uniform, just as Hitler did to Holocaust survivors. Our hearts and prayers are with the families who have witnessed this in Israel. This inhumane act in Gaza in 2025 is beyond condemnation. May God bless you."[2]
Hamas Starved The Hostages After Murdering Their Families
In an X post in Arabic and Hebrew, Kuwaiti liberal Jassem Al-Juraid slammed Hamas for starving the hostage Eli Sharabi after killing his family.[3]
Journalist Safaa Subhi Al-Nu'aimi posted a picture of Sharabi alongside a picture of a Palestinian woman, and commented, "Which one of them is squirming in hunger?"[4]
In another post Al-Nu'aimi decried the fact that Sharabi will be returning to an empty home after Hamas murdered his wife and two daughters on October 7, and also murdered his brother and is holding his body.[5]
The Red Cross Collaborated With Hamas As It Collaborated With Hitler
In a third post, Al-Nu'aimi condemned the Red Cross, writing: "The Red Cross has a lamentable history [of collaborating] with Nazism. It issued favorable reports about the condition of Jews in [Nazi] detention centers in the 1940s. It comes as no surprise that those who had ties with Hitler [now] have ties with Hamas."[6]
Ridicule Of Hamas Claims About Starvation In Gaza
Lebanese journalist Hussain Abdul Hussain mocked Hamas' claims regarding a genocide and starvation in Gaza. He posted a picture of a large group of Hamas operatives, and wrote sarcastically: "This is what Gazans look like a day after their starvation and genocide."[7]
Editor Of Iraqi News Site: The Jews Will Retaliate Against Iran, Qatar And Turkey For The Nazi Crimes Committed Against Them
In a series of messages on X, Sufian Al-Samarrai, editor of the Iraqi news website Baghdad Post, predicted that the Jews will take revenge on the countries that support Hamas for the "Nazi crimes" it has committed against them. In one of his posts he shared a video of Hamas' release of the three Israeli hostages, alongside a picture of Holocaust survivors, and commented: "Have you noticed that the ISIS-like Hamas gangs, which are supported by Qatar, Turkey and Iran, feed only the Jewish women hostages, whereas the men are released looking like [they were held] in the prisons of the Nazi Holocaust[?]… These sights of [starved] Jews will surely cause them to retaliate against all the countries that support this holocaust, several times more [forcefully] than they retaliated against Hitler."[8] In another post he wrote: "The problem of Iran, Qatar and Turkey, which fund the Islamist gangs, is their disregard of the warning conveyed to them by the Jews: 'never again.'"[9]
