For nearly a decade and a half – from before 9/11 and the dawning of the reform movement in the Middle East to the Arab Spring and the end of the bin Laden era, MEMRI has worked to compile the most extensive archives of translations and analyses from the Arab and Muslim world, analyzing crucial developments impacting the security of the U.S. and the West, with a focus on the many reformist and liberal voices that began to speak out and rapidly gathered momentum.
MEMRI relies solely on the generosity of our donors to add research on a daily basis to our extensive archives. During this busy and important time, we have been working around the clock monitoring, translating, and analyzing primary source material from the Middle East, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Iran, to "Bridge the Language Gap Between the Middle East and the West."
As a MEMRI reader, you are familiar with our continuing efforts to monitor more media sources in more countries, research more subjects, and translate into more languages. Your generous support for MEMRI enables us to assist the U.S. government and military in the day-to-day fight against extremism – including monitoring terrorists, supporting reformists, and documenting antisemitic hatred and other forms of bigotry in the region's media. Our work benefits our troops abroad and policymakers at home – and is all the more essential in light of the grave shortage of translators qualified to work for the U.S. government and military.
MEMRI staffers across the world translate from hundreds of Arabic, Farsi, Dari, Hindi, Urdu/Pashtu and Turkish newspapers, magazines, television shows and websites. No other organization does such research. But producing and distributing our research and maintaining our numerous websites is an increasingly costly undertaking.
Right now, events are unfolding and circumstances are changing very rapidly in the Middle East and South Asia – making MEMRI research more critical than ever before. Please consider supporting MEMRI and its projects, which include:
• MEMRI TV Project – MEMRI TV monitors and translates nearly 100 Arab and Iranian channels around the clock. This project is a major resource for researchers from government, academia, legislatures, and the media, providing them with a much deeper understanding of complex situations than they can obtain from other sources.
Just recently, MEMRI translated and released a clip of a Saudi woman filming her harassment by Saudi religious police who attempted to force her to leave a shopping mall because she was wearing lipstick and nail polish; within a few days, the video had gone viral. Viewed over 2,000,000 times, the MEMRI TV clip has been reported on by hundreds of media outlets, in the U.S. and worldwide – including CNN, The Huffington Post, MSN, AFP, and Reuters International.
• South Asia Studies Project – U.S. troops are fighting and U.S. strategic interests in South Asia face constant challenges, from terrorism and from political events – and from Pakistan's emerging military alliance with China.
• Palestinian Media Studies Project – Focusing on developments on the domestic Palestinian scene and in Palestinian Authority-Israel relations.
• Iran Studies Project – Focusing on Iran's ongoing nuclear and ballistic missile development.
• The Global Struggle Against Al-Qaeda – The fight continues as new and more creative leaders are emerging.
• The Reform Project – Tracking the liberal and reformist voices in the Arab and Muslim world.
• The Tom Lantos Archives on Anti-Semitism and Holocaust Denial – Focusing on the continuous and ubiquitous expressions of antisemitism and Holocaust denial across the Arab and Muslim world. Each year the Archives host an event on Capitol Hill marking the release of its annual report on this activity in the region. Sponsors of this annual event have included both the current and former Speaker of the House of Representatives.
YOUR SUPPORT FOR MEMRI ALLOWS US TO DIRECTLY SUPPORT THE FOLLOWING GROUPS ON A DAY-TO-DAY BASIS
• The U.S. Armed Forces – Army, Navy, Marines, and Air Force.
• The U.S. Congress – Over half of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives – from both sides of the aisle – have sought out MEMRI's assistance in drafting legislation and research on issues related to foreign affairs and terrorism.
• Federal agencies such as the DOD; DHS; FBI; Department of State; DOJ; TSA; and others.
• State and local authorities in all 50 states, on matters related to homeland security and counterterrorism.
• Universities and colleges – over 500 institutes of higher learning worldwide.
• Leading media outlets, both print and television, including The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, The New York Times, NBC, ABC, CBS, FOX, CNN, and others – all requesting MEMRI research every day.
