Please Support MEMRI's End of Year Campaign

November 29, 2011
Special Announcements No. 140

Dear MEMRI Subscriber,

Now entering its 14th year, MEMRI relies solely on the generosity of our donors to be able to add more research every day to our extensive archives. During this busy and important time, we have been working around the clock monitoring, translating, and analyzing primary source material from the Middle East, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran, and Turkey, to "Bridge the Language Gap Between the Middle East and the West."

Your generous support to MEMRI enables us to assist the U.S. government and military in the day-to-day fight against extremism – including monitoring terrorists, supporting reformists, and documenting antisemitic hatred and other forms of bigotry in the region's media. Our work benefits our soldiers abroad and policymakers at home – and is all the more essential in light of the grave shortage of translators affecting the U.S. government and military.

Headquartered in Washington, MEMRI’s global staff translates from hundreds of Arabic, Farsi, Dari, Hindi, Urdu/Pashtu and Turkish newspapers, magazines, television shows and websites. But producing and distributing our research and maintaining our numerous websites is an increasingly costly undertaking. No other organization does such research.

As a reader of MEMRI, you are familiar with our continuing efforts to monitor more media sources in more countries, research more subjects, and translate into more languages. MEMRI allows easy access to its archives of Special Dispatch and Inquiry & Analysis series as well as its MEMRI TV clips on all subjects and countries.

Like many others, MEMRI has been hard hit by the ongoing economic crisis. We need your help now more than ever. Your renewed donation is of critical importance, and we are extremely grateful for your generous support in these difficult times. We thank you for your past contribution to MEMRI and ask if you could kindly renew your support and possibly consider increasing it. If you donate by December 31, 2011, your donation will be tax deductible for 2011.

WHY YOU SHOULD SUPPORT MEMRI

Every day MEMRI is "Bridging the Language Gap Between the Middle East and the West" with its cutting-edge research. Right now, events are unfolding and circumstances are changing very rapidly in the Middle East and South Asia – making MEMRI research more critical than ever before.

Research & Website Development From The Past Year

South Asia Studies Project – American soldiers are fighting and American strategic interests are constantly being challenged in this region, by terrorism and by political events in the region – and by Pakistan's emerging military alliance with China.

MEMRI TV Project – MEMRI TV monitors and translates nearly 100 Arab and Iranian channels around the clock. This project is a major resource for researchers from government, academia, legislatures, and the media, providing them with a much deeper understanding of complex situations than they can obtain from other sources.

Palestinian Media Studies Project – Focusing on developments on the domestic Palestinian scene and in Palestinian Authority-Israel relations. Also focusing on the gap between the formally declared plan of the PLO which focuses on agreements and peace, and its inner discourse which proclaims totally opposite plans.

Iran Studies Project – Focusing on Iran's ongoing nuclear and aerospace efforts.

The Global Struggle Against Al-Qaeda – The fight continues, following the May 2011 killing of leader Osama bin Laden.

The Reform Project - Tracking the "Arab Spring" uprisings, and the competition for power taking place between reformists and various other interests throughout the region.

The Tom Lantos Archives on Anti-Semitism and Holocaust Denial - Focusing on the continuous and ubiquitous expressions of antisemitism and Holocaust denial across the Arab and Muslim world. Each year the Archives host an event on Capitol Hill to release a report on antisemitic activity of the past year.

"In April of 1945, after inspecting the newly liberated Ohrdruf concentration camp near Weimar, Germany, General Dwight D. 'Ike' Eisenhower ordered all available American troops to go and witness the horrors he'd just seen. He also forced German citizens and officials from nearby towns to do the same… He understood that there must be a record, first-hand evidence, and incontrovertible answers to those who would deny the Holocaust. Ike's example is reflected in the work of the Middle East Media Research Institute. The Institute's Anti-semitism & Documentation Project provides clear, analytical monitoring of modern anti-semitism so that today's injustices may be confronted in the clear light of truth…"
-John Boehner, Speaker of the House of Representatives

"With his example, brilliance, eloquence, commitment, and dedication, Tom Lantos left us a legacy and a responsibility, and that is why his cause is now our cause, and that is why his work –the work of the Lantos Anti-Semitism and Holocaust Denial Archives – is so important to all of us."
-Nancy Pelosi, Minority Leader of the House of Representatives
