Iran | Special Dispatch No. 11665

Officially, Tehran Iran maintains that as far as it is concerned, there is no difference whether the U.S. has a Democratic or a Republican president, and that no matter what, America is the Great Satan. However, several regime officials have expressed their views on Trump's reelection and underlined his responsibility for the U.S.'s January 2020 killing of IRGC Qods Force commander Gen. Qassem Soleimani, and for the harsh sanctions policy against Iran. The following are some reactions by senior regime officials and regime-affiliated outlets to Donald Trump's election as the President of the United States:

Hossein Kanani Moghaddam, former Iranian politician and officer in Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), said in a November 6 interview for Nameh News: "I believe that Trump leans more towards negotiating and minimizing the tensions in the Middle East, even though he is likely to revive his previous policy. Also, the issue of [vengeance] for America's assassination of Qassem Soleimani [still] exists, and the sword of vengeance for Soleimani's assassination hovers over Trump's head and the heads of his friends and of the perpetrators of this deed."[1]

IRGC Deputy Commander Ali Fadavi: "Iran And The Resistance Front Are Ready"

Ali Fadavi, deputy commander of the IRGC, said on November 6 in an interview with Al-Masira TV: "We are not ruling out a preemptive strike by America and the Zionist regime aimed at preventing Iran from carrying out Operation True Promise III. Iran and the resistance front are ready, and the Zionists cannot confront us, and they must wait for our response. Our arsenal has enough weapons and facilities to attack the Zionists, and we have not hesitated to attempt to act in this area. The territory of the Zionist regime is small, and we have a bank of sizeable and vital targets in this regime."[3]

We have very bitter experience with the past policies and approaches of the various American administrations. The election [outcome] is an opportunity to reexamine [Trump's] mistaken approaches of the past. What is important to Iran, and the criterion for its assessment, is the deeds of the American administration."[4]

On the cover page of its November 6 issue, the magazine of the IRGC-affiliated Tasnim News Agency, Vitrine, under a headline stating "In Front Of And Behind The Satan," depicted Uncle Sam as a blood-red Satan brandishing coins featuring Trump and Harris, and wrote: "In Iran, there is usually a perception that the Democrats are peace-seekers and the Republicans are warmongers with a more aggressive policy vis-à-vis Iran. But in fact, the positions of the Democrats and the Republicans [both] follow a similar logic. Infrequently, there is an issue such as enmity towards Iran among the politicians of both [U.S.] parties, on which they agree."[5]
