Complimenting MEMRI's translations of the printed media, The MEMRI TV Monitor Project was launched in June 2004 to provide Western audiences with a timely summary of newsworthy items from Arab and Iranian television channels.
MEMRI operates a high-tech TV monitoring studio around the clock, overseeing every major Arab and Iranian television channel. The center has the capability to digitally capture video from satellite TV at the moment of broadcast and then translate and add subtitles to the clips. Additionally, each clip is converted into two formats; a high resolution format which is distributed to the media as well as a low resolution format for streaming video on the website. This process is effectively "Bridging the Language Gap Between the Middle East and the West." To date, there are more than 679 clips on the website with ones added daily at www.memritv.org
MEMRI TV clips have appeared on major networks such as CNN, FOX, ABC, NBC, MSNBC, WB, UPN, as well as throughout the world on television stations such as the BBC, EL Mundo (Spain), and Rai TV (Italy). In the printed media, MEMRI TV has been used in stories in leading news outlets such as The Wall Street Journal, London Times, The Weekly Standard, and many others.
MEMRI TV makes the otherwise almost unobtainable news content easily accessible through the website, which receives more than a million hits a month.
About the Project
MEMRI's TV monitoring center focuses on political, cultural, religious, social, and other developments and debates in the Arab and Muslim world including Iran. The project archive currently includes clips from more than 40 sources that cover Islamic leaders and clerics, Arab and Iranian journalists and editors (working in the Middle East and the West), academics and researchers, public opinion and policy makers, politicians (parliamentarians and government officials), military experts, intellectuals, and authors.
