On December 20, 2024, CCTV Video News Agency (China) published a series of video reports about ceremonies and galas – which were attended by Chinese President Xi Jinping – marking the 25th anniversary of Macao's "reunification" with mainland China (i.e. the 1999 handover of Macao, which ended 442 years of Portuguese rule of the island). During an event that was also the inauguration ceremony for the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) government, Xi delivered a speech in which he encouraged the youth of Macao to be "builders" and to bear the torch of the cause of "One Country, Two Systems." In addition, at a gala marking the anniversary, he was seen singing a PRC anthem named "Ode to the Motherland" together with the audience.

Xi Jinping: "Young people are the hope and future of Macao and an energetic force in building Macao and the country. Over the past two days. I have met many young people in Macao. Some have become outstanding talent in the governance and management of the SAR, some have achieved remarkable success in innovation and entrepreneurship, some are excelling in teaching and research positions, and some are making their mark on the international stage.

"The SAR government and all sectors of society must pay more attention to the youth, creating better environments and conditions for their growth, development, and the fulfillment of their aspirations. I hope that young people will set lofty goals and make solid efforts with Macao and the country in mind, and assume the role of builders and successors of the 'one country, two systems' cause, allowing their youth and exuberance to shine brightly in the vast fields of building a strong nation and a prosperous Macao."
