Hamas's representative in Lebanon, Ahmad Abd Al-Hadi, said in an April 11, 2023 interview on Al-Manar TV (Hizbullah-Lebanon) that threatening to target the Israeli gas drilling rigs would constitute a new "strategic weapon" for Hamas. He said that Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh has already stated in the context of the maritime border dispute between Lebanon and Israel that the Palestinians have and will "defend" the right to Israel's offshore natural gas.
Interviewer: "Netanyahu said yesterday that the maritime border agreement with Lebanon has harmed the Zionist power of deterrence. Can the Palestinian resistance target the [Israeli] gas rigs, thus imposing some sort of deterrence?"
Ahmad Ad Al-Hadi: "When Hamas leader, the mujahid Ismail Haniyeh came to Lebanon the previous time, he said at an event in Sidon that the Palestinians have a right to the gas. In light of the maritime border demarcation agreement that took place at the time, he said: 'We and the brothers in Lebanon are free to choose how to deal with this issue, but Palestinians have a right [to the gas] and we will defend it.' This means that he brought this into the equation.
"Therefore, what prevents the Palestinian resistance — in any future war or conflict with this occupation — from including the issue of the gas [rigs] in its operational plans? Therefore, the Zionist enemy has been trying to answer this question as of late, because of the importance they attach to this issue.
"Threatening [to target the gas rigs] is a strategic weapon that has been added to the weapons of the resistance in any future conflict."
