In a TV interview, Prof. Naila Selini, a Tunisian researcher of Islamic thought, said: "The status of us women is worse today than it was in 2004 and 2005... because of the nonsense uttered on a daily basis by preachers." In the interview, which aired on the Saudi Rotana Khalijiyya TV on February 22, 2015, she said that what is needed is "a revolution in the religious texts."
Following are excerpts:
Naila Selini: The first thing I did in my academic career was to open the Quran, and to cast off all the interpretations and conclusions surrounding our sacred Quranic text. That is when I embarked upon my adventure, and began to uncover the true status of women in the Quran. Today, I can say that the status of women in the Quran is not the same as their status in Islamic jurisprudence.

It is Allah who created you, me, our nation, and all of the nations, and He is the creator of the [Quranic] words as well. Allah did not wait for one of His servants to come and interpret His message on his behalf.

The status of us women in worse today than it was in 2004 and 2005. This is because of the nonsense uttered on a daily basis by preachers and by people who viewed jurisprudence as philosophy. Every day, new sheiks issue new fatwa from mosque pulpits.

The Muslim nation will not arise and the West will not change its position toward us unless we carry out a religious revolution. We must revolutionize our religious texts, out of confidence that this will draw us closer to Allah, from whom we have drifted by our worship of what these people have been saying about our sacred text.
