On September 18, 2019, an Islamic State (ISIS) supporter on Telegram warned fellow ISIS supporters, who, following the release of ISIS leader Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi's audio message on September 16, posted photos of handwritten messages proclaiming their allegiance to ISIS, that if the photos were taken from the cameras on their personal cellphones, they may contain meta data that can be used to identify them and their location.
He advised re-formatting the phone, filling up its memory by downloading lengthy videos, then re-formatting it again, and exchanging it for a new one; he also advised using the services of Pixelgarde.com to remove personal data from photos before sharing them. A similar warning, and advice on how to remove meta data was posted to Bank Al-Ansar's Telegram channel.
