On December 19, 2016, it was confirmed that the Turkish government had blocked direct access to Tor (The Onion Router), not long after an order to block Twitter, Facebook and YouTube, and to place constraints on WhatsApp and Skype. Tor had become popular among Turkish citizens, who had used it to bypass internet censorship in their country.
