On January 19, 2021, an Urdu daily reported that a Pakistani student was arrested for using bitcoin and other "electronic means" to transfer money to Islamic State (ISIS) fighters in Syria. The student collected funds on mobile apps, transferred them to a bank, where they were converted to U.S. dollars before being sent to Syria. According to the report, the student used Twitter to maintain contact with the families of ISIS fighters in Syria.
