United States | Special Dispatch No. 11465

Sheikh Abu Usama At-Thahabi asked Allah to curse men who act and dress like women, in a June 30, 2024 lecture at Masjid As-Sunnah in Orlando, FL. He also said that the corporal punishment dictated by Islam is still applicable today wherever possible in the Islamic world, on the condition that the punishments be carried out in a humane and "quick, precise, and clean" fashion like "chopping," which is better than execution via lethal injection or electrocution.

Abu Usama At-Thahabi is a U.S.-born imam who used to serve as the imam of the Green Lane Masjid in Birmingham, England. He has recently returned to the United States. For a similar sermon by Sheikh At-Thahabi from 2019, see MEMRI TV Clip No. 7521.

Islamic Corporal Punishment Like Chopping Limbs Or Beheading Are "Quick, Precise, And Clean", Better Than Lethal Injection Or Electrocution

"All of the hudud [Islamic punishments] today are operable, by someone who has the ability to do that in the Muslim world. That's number one. Doing it exactly how the Prophet did it is not something that is obligatory. So some people can be punished by chopping, you know... Corporal punishment. But the thing has to be done in a way where you spare him suffering. It can't be inhumane. Like electrocution – it's inhumane. Like those shots that they give – inhumane. They [the victim] go through a lot of pain and suffering, as people who witnessed it say. So it has to be something that is quick, precise, and clean. It doesn't necessarily have to be by stoning as such."
