In a recent interview, Mohamed Abdel-Hadi Allam, editor-in-chief of "Al-Ahram," said: "There is no 'alliance' between Egypt [and the U.S.]." "The U.S. has inherited the colonialist policies of Britain and France, and it has not abandoned the characteristics of imperialism," he said. The interview aired on Russia Today TV on August 13, 2014.
Following are excerpts:
Interviewer: Al-Sisi has visited Moscow twice already. Doesn't this bother America, which is Cairo's ally?
Mohamed Abdel-Hadi Allam: First of all, there is no "alliance" between Egypt [and the U.S.]. This is the terminology used by the Mubarak regime, but it was not accurate even in those days. There was no alliance in the true sense of the word. The two countries differ in their military doctrine, in their interests, in their culture... The term ["alliance"] was not accurate.
These relations would have been better described as vital and mutually beneficial. Basically, these relations do not constitute an alliance.
As for [the American] resentment – this is only natural. The U.S., or rather, our disagreement with U.S. policy... The U.S. has inherited the colonialist policies of Britain and France, and it has not abandoned the characteristics of imperialism. Just as Britain and France opposed the peoples' dreams and aspirations of independence and self-determination, the U.S. opposes the peoples' legitimate aspirations in many parts of the world.
