In a Friday sermon delivered in Tehran, Ayatollah Ahmad Khatami said that America's "Satanic deeds have multiplied ten-fold" in the past 36 years since the Iranian Revolution. "Logic dictates that as long as the American Satan continues to exist, we will continue to shout: 'Death to America!' he said, and the crowds responded with cries of "Death to America!" The sermon was broadcast on Iran's Channel 1 on August 15, 2014.

Ayatollah Ahmad Khatami: Thirty-something years ago, Imam [Khomeini] gave an order to cut off ties with America, under a single principle: "America is the Great Satan." Now, 36 years later – has the Great Satan shrunk? Has it stopped carrying out its Satanic deeds? Its Satanic deeds have multiplied ten-fold.
Despite the hegemony enjoyed by America and its power, especially after its recent support of the barbaric deeds of the Zionists, it has suffered an utter defeat. It was your cries of "Death to America!" that weakened it.
