The following are excerpts from a Friday sermon in Qom by Ayatollah 'Ali Meshkini, the head of the Iranian Assembly of Experts. Channel 2, Iranian TV aired the sermon on February 5, 2005:
Ayatollah 'Ali Meshkini: The government of Libya-- listen closely to my next sentence-- surrendered to America after a long struggle. The equipment of what it wanted to build [i.e. nuclear facilities] - it gave it all to America. It got to the point that in private meetings Qaddafi would hold an American cigarette, smoke it, and say: "This cigarette is American." This demonstrates Libya's surrender to America. Now, some time has passed, and he is remorseful, and says: "America did not fulfill any of its promises to me."
Qaddafi did not read the Koranic verse, which says that they are the leaders of heresy. They have no faith. Anyone who reconciles with them will become miserable. Allah willing, we will never reconcile [with the US].I hope that through these elections the Iraqi people will liberate itself from the claws of the enemy and the occupiers, and that it will follow the religious authorities, especially Ayatollah Sistani. Gentlemen, 26 years ago we followed a religious authority called Ruhollah [Khomeini], and this is how we reached victory, Allah be praised. You too should follow the religious authorities, and, Allah willing, you will reach victory.
