British-Palestinian journalist Abdel Bari Atwan said in video that was uploaded to his YouTube channel on February 28, 2022 that the Arabs should not side against Russia in the Ukraine-Russia war, since it is America – which is on the other side – that supports Israel and that is responsible for the destruction of Iraq, Libya, Syria, Yemen, Palestine, as well as for the occupation of the Al-Aqsa Mosque. He emphasized that the war in Ukraine has nothing to do with the Arabs, who he said should thank Allah that the war is taking place in Europe, which has enjoyed peace and prosperity for decades while the Middle East was being ravaged by wars. In addition, Atwan criticized journalists who have called for opposing Russia, and he said: "They want to recruit the neo-Nazis [in Europe]? Okay, let them recruit them... The neo-Nazis against the Islamists? Let them slaughter one another." He added: "The war has reached Europe. Let them crush one another. What does this have to do with us?"
Abdel Bari Atwan: "Why are we hostile towards Russia? Is America our friend? Who has waged the wars of the Middle East? Who destroyed Iraq, Libya, Syria, Yemen, and Palestine? Have we forgotten about it? Who supports the occupation of the Al-Aqsa Mosque, the churches, and the mosques? Who is it if not America? Who moved the American Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem? Who supports Israel?
"Why should we got fight a war in Ukraine alongside America — a war which has absolutely nothing to do with us? Wake up! Let us admit that we have our own interests as Arabs and as Muslims. This war has nothing to do with us.
"Thank Allah that this war is taking place in Europe, which is the source of all our problems. And the war is led by America. Since WWII, all the wars have taken place in our region, in the Middle East, while Europe has seen stability, blessings, prosperity, and economic growth. It has experienced unusually [favorable] conditions. Now the war has reached Europe.
"Let them crush one another. What does this have to do with us? Let them get off our case. They have killed us, destroyed us. So now the war has come to Europe.
"They want to recruit the neo-Nazis? Okay, let them recruit them. This will bring destruction throughout Europe. They will not be able to control them. The neo-Nazis against the Islamists? Let them slaughter one another. I don't know. It is impossible to make sense of this mess. I find it strange that some journalists are writing articles calling to fight against Russia."
