Chinese journalist and military expert Chen Hu said in a video that was posted to his Xigua Video account on May 11, 2024 that the era when the U.S. could speak to China from a position of strength is over, particularly now that China has Type 055 destroyers and H-6K bombers. Chen Hu is the former Director and Editor of the PLA Branch of the Xinhua News Agency, Editor-in-Chief of Xinhua News Agency’s World Military magazine, and Chief Editor of China's Armed Forces magazine.
Chen Hu: "The root cause of the entire South China Sea issue, including the recent series of bad behavior by the Philippines in the South China Sea region, lies not with the Philippines, but with the United States. China is not the kind of country that speaks from a 'position of strength.' It is not the kind of strong power that uses the so-called 'position of strength' to coerce others into achieving certain goals. We advocate reason and fair principles, but if you want to speak to us from a 'position of strength,' we will tell you that your position no longer exists. Therefore, China does not accept that kind of approach, and we will also let the world see that China does not accept it.
"Talking about the rust on American warships, the parts falling off of American aircraft, publicly showcasing the Type 055 destroyer docked at Mischief Reef, and the H-6K bomber taking off from the Xisha airport, all serve to tell the U.S. and relevant countries where the true position of strength lies in this sea area and region.
"Back in 2016, the South China Sea saw the United States ultimately retreat, and the situation in the South China Sea gradually calmed amid turbulent conditions. Today, we see a comparison of the power and status of China and the U.S. in this region. If you can tell the U.S. and all related countries that, in this region, the U.S. power and status are far from being comparable to ours, what do you think the outcome will be? I believe everyone knows the answer without me having to say it.
"At this point, some might say that China's naval and air power still shows a noticeable gap compared to the U.S. at present. I want to remind you that I am talking about the South China Sea Area, specifically this region. So, when talking about the South China Sea, within the First Island Chain, and even beyond the First Island Chain, can't we say that the United States' position of strength no longer exists? If you ask me, at least the era when the United States could speak to us solely based on its position of strength has long gone."
