Chinese venture capitalist and political scientist Eric X. Li spoke during a session titled "Philosophy and Geopolitics of a Multipolar World" at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), which took place on June 5-8, 2024. Li said that the BRICS countries and the Global South make up 65% of international economic growth and trade amongst themselves more than they do with the rest of the world. He said that the American references to "the West and the rest" is therefore inaccurate, and that it is more accurate to say: "the world and the West." He also said that the West aims to erect "high walls" around itself, and that this is great to "keep them inside." The video of Li's speech was posted online by the Tsargrad Institute on June 10, 2024.

Eric X. Li: "If you look at BRICS, and the rest of the world, we're about half of the world's GDP at 60-65% of growth... So we now trade amongst ourselves more than we trade with them, since last year I think. The Global South trades more amongst ourselves than with the so-called Global North. So, I want to turn the idea upside down and say – I think the Americans first came up with the idea, they call it the West and the Rest.

"The reality is actually the world and the West. We're the world, my friends, we are the world... They are The West, which is a small garden, and they want to erect high walls, that's great, keep them inside. Thank you."
