Egyptian Islamic Leader Bassem Khafagy criticized Hamas in an August 27 interview with Al-Sharq TV, a channel affiliated with the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood and broadcasting from Turkey. Khafagy said that Hamas should not have thanked the "coup" regime of Al-Sisy for its help in reaching a cease-fire.
Host: "Last night, Hamas and the Islamic Jihad movement published a communique expressing their gratitude and appreciation for the role played by Egypt."

Bassem Khafagy: "I would like to address a message of rebuke to the leaders of Hamas and the Islamic Jihad in Gaza and Palestine. I would like to start by saying that I share their joy over their victory and everything, but the truth is that I have a lump in my throat, and I think it is true for many of the people who are fighting against the coup in Egypt.

"To tell you the truth, we did not expect out brothers, the leaders of Hamas and the Islamic Jihad, to express their gratitude to the conspirators and murderers, who bear direct responsibility for the starving of Gaza, for the siege on Gaza, and for the killing of the people in Gaza, including leaders in Hamas and the Islamic Jihad. Time will prove that this coup is directly responsible for the killing of some of the Hamas and Islamic Jihad leaders. We did not expect such gratitude (towards Egypt). Absolutely not. In all honesty, we expected them to express their gratitude to the people who really had a share in this victory.

"We expected them to express their gratitude to Dr. Mohamed Morsi, and to the imprisoned (MB) leaders, who are on trial today on charges of conspiring with and supporting Hamas.

"I'd like to say in all frankness to the leaders of Hamas and the Islamic Jihad that the blood of our sons is just as precious as the blood of your sons. It is inconceivable that you should thank the people responsible for shedding the blood of thousands of our sons. How would you feel if we thanked the Zionist entity for something it did? I am dismayed, upset, and have a lump in my throat. It's not just me. All the people I spoke with said that they felt the same way."
