Following are excerpts from a program with Egyptian TV host Riham Said, which aired on Mihwar TV on January 14, 2009.
Riham Said: When the Gaza invasion took place, I was surprised at all the demonstrations and at all the people who said that we must fight. People in the media kept talking about whether we should fight or not, and so on. This was very strange to me. Only 3-4 weeks ago, we were talking about the rising prices, about how people could not cope with this, and about the unemployment. Does it makes sense that instead of praying that the Palestinian will be relieved of all this and that there will be some kind of peace in the Arab world, we prefer to have more wars and more victims, and to have – in addition to Palestine – Egypt, Syria, and Iraq [at war] as well? People keep talking about honor. Honor lies in avoiding bloodshed. In my view, instead of wasting time on demonstrations, we should see what they need, make donations to them, and help people in the Al-'Arish hospital.

War has never solved anything. We waste time on slogans... I think it is ridiculous when people put on the Palestinian kaffiyeh, and at the same time they smoke cigarettes and joke around. What's this? Is it enough to put on a kaffiyeh to show solidarity with the Palestinians? You show your solidarity by standing in front of the university holding a sign? No, doing this is worthless. Go pray for them, recite Koranic verses for them, got to the hospitals in northern Sinai and help them, give them medicine, give them money, whatever – pay for somebody to be treated in some hospital, whatever. But all these slogans – let's be honest with ourselves. Even if you believe that you should go and fight – haven't you seen how painful funerals are?
