Former Iranian ambassador to Afghanistan Abolfazl Zohrevand said that if the Afghan people accept the Taliban, then Iran will respect and honor this choice. He made his remarks in an interview that aired on Al-Alam TV (Iran) on August 15, 2021. Zohrevand added that Iran will cooperate with the government elected and supported by the Afghan people. He added that with the Taliban in control of Afghanistan, America cannot exert pressure over Iran from within the country. Zohrevand continued to say that Iran’s concern is for the Afghan people, which was oppressed by the Americans. He added that America did not enter Afghanistan for the benefit of the Afghan people, rather it came to further its capitalist interests in the region, and it is leaving following its military defeats.
Abolfazl Zohrevand: "If the Afghan people accept the Taliban, we respect and honor this. We will cooperate with the government elected and supported by the Afghan people.

"America cannot exert pressure on us from [within] Afghanistan, just like it could not exert pressure on us from Iraq and elsewhere. It is the Afghan people that are important to us. Our concern is for them. The Americans oppressed the Afghan people. They preferred their capitalist regional interests over those of the Afghan people. The Americans did not come to Afghanistan 20 years ago for the sake of the Afghan people, and now they were forced to leave Afghanistan by the defeats they suffered in the region. They could no longer stay in the region."
