In a June 27, 2023 video posted to the Lebanon On YouTube channel, former Lebanese Interior Minister Marwan Charbel warned EU Representative for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell that if the EU "pushes" Lebanon, it will open its shores and allow the Syrian refugees in Lebanon to go to Europe. Charbel added that when Turkey similarly allowed the refugees in its country to go to Europe, it was paid $7 billion to close its borders.
Marwan Charbel: "I say to [EU Representative for Foreign Affairs] Josep Borrell, or what ever his name is... Dear Josep, if you pressure us, we will do what they did in Turkey. We will open our shores and let the [refuges] go over to you. If you have the ability to stop then you will be welcome to do so."
Interviewer: "We have seen..."
Charbel: "We did not do what the Turks did. The Turks opened the borders, and eventually, the [European] countries had to beg the Turks [to stop the refugees]. They were forced to pay Turkey $7 billion, so it would close its borders. So far we have not done this, but do not push us, because we will."
