Hizbullah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah said in a July 11, 2024 televised address that the culture of martyrdom "is not a culture of death." He explained that rather, this is a "culture of life." Nasrallah said that according to this culture you are sacrificing tens of thousands of martyrs so that tens of millions can live in "pride, honor, and security." He added: "This is what we want for Lebanon and its people." The address, marking the fifth night of Ashura, was uploaded to Motazen on YouTube.
Hassan Nasrallah: "Some Lebanese are arguing with us every day. They say: what does the culture of life mean to you? We want to eat whatever we like. We want to get drunk. We want to drink. We want to go to the beach. We want to wear whatever. We want to do whatever we want, they say. You call this a 'culture of life'?

"Our concept is that the culture of Martyrdom is not a culture of death. Rather, it is a culture of life. It creates life. It is part of the culture of life. You may say that it completes the culture of life. Call it what you like.
"In fact, this is not an Islamic culture. It is a religious culture, the culture of all the prophets. Moreover, it is the necessary outcome of human nature, brothers and sisters. It is the necessary conclusion of human nature. Human instinct asserts this.
"I do not want to get into what happened in the ancient history of different people, but in the previous century, when the Americans occupied Vietnam... Are the Vietnamese Muslim? No. Do they believe in the Quran? No. Nevertheless, they embarked on their struggle – fighting, resistance, confrontation, death, sacrifices, patience, and steadfastness. They sacrificed hundreds of thousands of people, and suffered for many years in their war with the American occupiers.
"This is part of their natural inclination. This is how people are. People do not accept anyone occupying their land, plundering their property, attacking the honor of their women, or occupying them. They do not let foreigners lord over them. This is human instinct. How did the Vietnamese manage to emerge victorious, and to regain their land and their country? By saying: We want to eat, drink, swim, wear whatever we want? Or did they do it with weapons, fighting, blood, sacrifices, resistance, patience, tears, pain, brains, science, solidarity, and unity?

"Like in the case of other people in the world, you are sacrificing 1,000-2,000 martyrs, so that millions can live. You are sacrificing tens of thousands of martyrs, so that millions can live, so that tens of millions can live in pride, honor, and security, so that they can feel their sovereignty and maintain their dignity and the resources of their land.
"This is the culture of resistance and martyrdom. This is what we want for Lebanon and its people.

"As for the culture of death – where does it come from? From America. We have not attacked anyone. America came and attacked the people of our region. Israel came and attacked Palestine, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, and the region as a whole."
