Imam Amir Abdel Malik Ali said in his May 17, 2024 Friday sermon at the UC Irvine encampment that the university's chancellor Howard Gillman is "a Zionist Jew and his Zionism is showing." Ali said that he identified Gillman was Jewish because of his last name. He continued to say that there are "good Jews" and "bad Jews," and the bad Jews are "basically the Zionists." Ali spoke following a police crackdown on the university's campus encampment. The sermon was posted on OC Palestine on YouTube.
Imam Amir Abdel Malik Ali is the leader of the Oakland branch of As-Sabiqun, which was founded by DC Imam Abdul Alim Musa. As-Sabiqun has been identified as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center and the Anti-Defamation League. In December 2023, Amir Abdel Malik Ali delivered a lecture in Santa Clara, California in which he asserted that the Jews are the new Nazis.
Amir Abdel Malik Ali: "Brothers and sisters, we got here last night. Some of the brothers have been telling us about some of the things that have been going on. One of the thigs that we heard was that the negotiating team that was negotiating with the university about divestments... That the university abruptly stopped the negotiations and suspended the whole team.
"Doesn't that sound like a fascist move? Ain't that fascism? Then the brothers showed us the tape on Wednesday, and we saw some of what happened on Wednesday. Some of us got to thinking, and we asked the brothers: 'What is your chancellor's name?' And they said: 'Gillman.' What's his first name? Howard? Howard Gillman. And we said: 'Gillman, Gillman – he's a Zionist Jew.' The chancellor of UCI is a Zionist Jew.

"Now we need to bring the chancellor out of the closet. He is a Zionist Jew and his Zionism is showing. When he came at the students like he did, there was a hatred behind him. That is why [his response] was so disproportionate. There was a hatred behind it. There was a hatred of Palestine, a hatred of Palestinians, and it was a hatred of Islam.
"Your chancellor is a Zionist Jew. And I hope there is administration here. I want you to take this message to them if it is... How dare you bring Zionist tactics to the community of UCI? How dare you?

"How dare you bring that to UCI? And if that is what you are bringing to UCI, we tell you the same thing we tell your people in the Holy Land – your days are numbered.
