Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi: Syrian Army's Failure Surprised Everyone, Including Iran – If They Had Done Their Job, Not Even Aleppo Would Have Fallen

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi discussed the collapse of Bashar Al-Assad’s regime in a December 8, 2024 appearance on IRINN TV (Iran), criticizing the Syrian army’s failure to put up “any resistance” to opposition forces. He stated that everyone – not just Iran – was surprised by the Syrian army’s inability to handle the opposition’s movements from Idlib, despite Iranian and Syrian security and intelligence agencies allegedly being fully aware of what was happening in the area. Araghchi emphasized that if the Syrian army had done its job, not even Aleppo would have fallen to the opposition. He further noted that the “resistance forces” intervened and took action, even though they were occupied elsewhere at the time.

Abbas Araghchi: "Our friends in the security and intelligence agencies – both ours and Syria's – knew perfectly well what was going on in Idlib and that area. All the relevant information was passed on to the Syrian government and military, and they also had information of their own.

[...]

"What came as a surprise was the Syrian army's inability to deal with that movement, and the speed of that movement was not expected – not just by Iran, but by everybody.

[...]

"In my opinion, the main element that led to the success of the latest development in Syria was the Syrian army that refrained from putting up any resistance. That's it. The resistance forces, although they were busy elsewhere, showed up and did what they had to do, and if the [Syrian army] had done its job, even Aleppo would not have fallen. I am saying this with full confidence."
