Following are excerpts from an interview with Mojtaba Hosseini, the representative of Iranian Leader Ali Khamenei in Syria, which aired on Al-Dunya TV on April 20, 2009.
Mojtaba Hosseini: This is not merely a matter of tactics. America is arrogant by nature. It has become accustomed to treat others with condescendence and insolence, unless it is forced to surrender. I think the time has come for the arrogant countries – the countries that want to conspire against others – to change their position and make do with the capabilities they have.
America is a powerful country, with vast territory and many capabilities. If America were to make do with the capabilities it has, instead of pursuing interests in other countries and at the expense of others, then there would be peace.
When we talk about peace, we must examine what we mean by peace. Does peace mean that there will be no Hizbullah or Islamic resistance? Does peace mean that Hamas and the Palestinians should give in to a cancerous tumor like Israel, and should officially recognize its existence? Is this what peace means? Does peace mean that America can deploy its forces in the Persian Gulf, in Afghanistan, Iraq, and elsewhere? Is this what peace means?
If this is what peace means, we and America view things very differently. We believe that every country in the world has its own laws, and that it should live according to its traditions. As long as the U.S. continues with its positions and maintains its character, there cannot be any proper cooperation between us.

The U.S. should give up on its positions, acknowledge Iran's right on the nuclear issue, and recognize that just as the U.S. has a right to nuclear technology, so does Iran.

How can the U.S. believe that it has the right to send weapons to every corner of the world, along with its armies, its soldiers, and to sell weapons to any country it wants, but that Iran does not have the right to give weapons to the Islamic resistance, to the Lebanese, who want to defend themselves and their country, and who do not use these weapons one against the other, but against an enemy that attacked them – Israel... Doesn't Iran have the right to support Palestine and the Palestinian people with weapons that enable them to defend themselves and their homes? Does this constitute aggression and support of terror? At the same time, they supply Israel with the most powerful and lethal weapons, and they spread weapons all over the world.
