Iraqi politician Izzat Al-Shabandar came out in support of a bill that would criminalize homosexuality in a September 12, 2024 interview with Al-Sumaria TV (Iraq). He said that the Israeli-Zionist ideology is the "number one" danger to Iraq, while homosexuality is the second threat. Al-Shabandar referred to homosexuality as "horrifying" and suggested that Iraqi politicians come together to vote on this bill.
Izzat Al-Shabandar: "The number-one danger to Iraq, in my estimate, is the Israeli-Zionist ideology."
Interviewer: "Okay."
Al-Shabandar: "The second danger is the so-called homosexuality. Do not think that this is..."
Interviewer: "A fleeting matter..."
Al-Shabandar: "No."
Interviewer: "It is being impressed upon our social culture, in the cinema, in the school curricula..."
Al-Shabandar: "It is a horrifying invasion!"
Interviewer: "Horrifying indeed! Even the explanation is..."
Al-Shabandar: "Cartoons, caricatures..."
Interviewer: "Right, it's in every movie and TV series..."
Al-Shabandar: "One's favorite color, Hollywood. It's terrifying."
Interviewer: "True."
Al-Shabandar: "Let's say you have a five-year-old son or a grandson in London. He returns from kindergarten and says to his mother: 'Mom, I have a question.' She says: 'What is it?' 'Am I male or female,' he asks."
Interviewer: "Ugh! Am I a boy or a girl?"
Al-Shabandar: "Am I male or female? This is devastating. Devastating! The problem is that... Let me ask you a question about our political leaders. Why are they wasting so much time about the elections and so on? They are wasting too much time on this. Nobody prevents them [from banning homosexuality]. These are difficult times. People cannot wait anymore. Come on! Let the parliament vote on a bill that penalizes prostitution..."
Interviewer: "Right, criminalizing homosexuality..."
Al-Shabandar: "You are not even allowed to give this title to the bill!"
