Following are excerpts from Iraqi Shiite leader Muqtada Al-Sadr, which aired on Al-Iraqiya TV on July 12, 2006.
Muqtada Al-Sadr: [Saddam's trial] is a farce that is being played on the Iraqi people. The longer his trial continues, the longer the aggression against the Iraqi people will continue. There is no need for a trial at all. He should be treated the way he treated the Iraqi people. Whoever puts people into meat grinders or puts explosives into people's pockets and blows them up should be treated the same way. But the occupation is not giving us the chance to place the person who oppressed us on trial.

Even our land was plundered. Our resources have been plundered. The trial of the tyrant who oppressed us... America was not oppressed by him. On the contrary, Saddam will continue to benefit America until his last breath. We are the ones who were oppressed by Saddam - and so have the neighboring countries - and we should be the ones to try him, not America.

We demand that he be executed immediately.

Interviewer: Who do you think is behind the [Samarra mosque] bombing?
Muqtada Al-Sadr: The hand that holds the weapons is always America or Israel, or the accursed triangle of Israel, America, and Britain. But the weapon itself may change. It may be those tho accuse others of heresy, it may be the Ba'thists, and it may be others, only Allah knows.
