Nabih Berri, Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament, said that Syria had achieved a "balance of terror" with Israel and the response to a future Israeli strike would be inside Israel proper. Berri, who was speaking on Russia Today TV on May 11, also said: "If a war breaks out, I don't think that even the U.S. President will be able to bear the consequences - even the consequences for the Americans in Syria."

Nabih Berri: It was clear that the Syrian response [to the Israeli strikes] served as a warning – a very severe warning, using missiles that the Israelis cannot intercept. So this time, the response was in the occupied Syrian lands, but next time, it will be inside the Palestinian lands occupied by Israel. Inside Israel.

We know that the geographical size of Israel is small. It is not in their best interest to have a prolonged war, or battles, in the true sense of the word. If not for this response, Israel would have thought that this was a trivial thing, and would attack sensitive areas now and then, according to its intelligence, and then [its planes] would return. I believe that nothing can bring about stability, or some kind of peace or truce, more than this balance of terror, so to speak. I believe that [the Syrians] have achieved that.
