Palestinian Islamic Jihad leader Ziyad Nakhalah said in a June 17, 2023 interview with Al-Alam TV (Iran) that he is awaiting martyrdom and that he considers it a "gift." He elaborated that martyrdom is "what the mujahid is awarded when he concludes his service." Earlier in the interview, Nakhalah said the Palestinians will drive the Jews out of Palestine, the Galilee, and everywhere.
Ziyad Nakhalah: "Palestine is the homeland of the Palestinian people, as it is part of the Arab and Islamic region. We will drive the Jews out of Palestine, inshallah. We will drive them out of the Galilee, and out of everywhere.

"I am proud to say that I am more than seventy years old. At this age, I have no worries. I have no regrets. Becoming a martyr would be a gift, as far as I am concerned, having spent so much time in the resistance. I have been in the resistance for fifty years. After fifty years, I await the gift of becoming a martyr."
Interviewer: "So you wait for your martyrdom..."
Nakhalah: "Yes, I do. I am not taking dangerous chances, but martyrdom dose not scare me. Martyrdom is a badge of honor for any Palestinian mujahid. It is what the mujahid is awarded when he concludes his service."
