The Islamic Central Council of Switzerland (IZRS) published a German-language video in which it protested against the initiative to ban the niqab in the country. The video, which was posted on the YouTube channel of the IZRS on July 15, shows a niqab-clad woman participating in various sports and recreational activities, including riding a kick scooter, working out on an exercise bike, boxing, eating pizza, and culminating in jumping from a bridge into a river.
Speaker: "The European Court for Human Rights is convinced, I am not compatible with democracy, that there is no place for me in European society. They say, to protect democracy it is legitimate to ban my clothes and therefore myself from the public sphere. Well... We do not share this opinion. We are part of Europe and part of the public life we participate in equally. You do not believe it? Attention!
"Rules on clothing and the ban of religious acts evoke memories of dark times we do not want to take up again in today's modern times. There is no space for them in a democratic society. My Niqab. My Choice."
