On August 21, 2024, Australia-based Syrian Islamic scholar Sheikh Abdallah Al-Tamimi stated that Israel has long extended its hand in peace to Muslims and Arabs. He emphasized that Muslims and Arabs are incapable of conquering Israel and Jerusalem. According to Al-Tamimi, peace with Israel is an "obligatory religious duty," and such agreements are crucial for protecting Muslim security, even more so than Israel's. He warned against violating these agreements under any circumstances and cautioned against "fida'i acts" (terrorist acts) against Israel, calling such attacks—including the October 7 attacks and Hamas's suicide bombings—"deplorable" and "haram." Al-Tamimi also stated that anyone seeking to prevent peace with Israel is betraying the Sunni community. These statements were posted on Al-Ittijah Al-Jadid account on YouTube.
Sheikh Abdallah Al-Tamimi: "Israel has been extending its hand in peace and Muslims for a long time. The Arabs and Muslims are completely unable to conquer Israel and Jerusalem, because the power of the Muslims surrounding Israel is not even a quarter or a tenth of the power of Israel and its allies. Therefore, peace with the Israelis is an obligatory religious duty for the countries surrounding Israel.
"Those who violate the peace agreements with Israel that were signed by Muslims… [These agreements] are necessary to protect the security of the Muslims even more than protecting Israel's security. These agreements—that were signed by President Sadat, President Hosni Mubarak, King Hussein, and that Syria's late president Husni Al-Zaim wanted to sign... These agreements should not be violated under any circumstances.
"The Israelis should not be provoked with acts of killing that some call 'fida'i attacks,' even though it is known that there are no 'fida'I attacks' or acts of killing in Islamic jurisprudence. These attacks—which are a provocation against the Israeli forces, the Israeli state, and its allies and which always bring destruction upon Muslims—are haram, but October 7, or the suicide attacks conducted by Hamas. These suicide attacks are considered haram according the shari'a to begin with.
"These attacks were carried out by Hamas in order to thwart the implementation of the Oslo Accords between Yasser Arafat and Yitzhak Rabin. These are deplorable and haram attacks, and those who conducted them are criminals who wanted to get the Sunnis killed, get their property destroyed, which would foe them out of the places where they live—the West Bank, the Gaza Strip, and other places.
"Therefore, peace with Israel is obligatory. The people who want to prevent peace with Israeli are betraying the Sunnis. They are criminals, they are deluding Sunnis and placing them in danger, and they are leading Sunni youth to their deaths. I said this thirty years ago, I am saying this today, and I will keep saying this as long as Israel is extending its hand in peace to the Muslims."
