Mousa Abu Marzouk of the Hamas political bureau said in an August 10, 2024 phone interview on Al-Araby TV (Qatar) that Egypt has a special responsibility towards the Gaza Strip. He explained that Egypt must enforce a ceasefire and allow the food and medicine on the Egyptian side of the border to cross into Gaza. Abu Marzouk chastised Egypt for losing Gaza to Israel, signing the Camp David Accords, and turning the Philadelphi Corridor into a buffer zone between the Palestinians and Egyptians.
Mousa Abu Marzouk: "It is Egypt's duty to work for a ceasefire. It has a special responsibility in the Gaza Strip. It must not consider itself to be a mediator, whose neutrality prevents it from standing by the oppressed Palestinians. It was Egypt that has lost the Gaza Strip, and it was Egypt that has signed the Camp David Accords. It was Egypt that has turned the Philadelphi corridor into a [buffer] between the Palestinians and the Egyptians, and has now allowed the Israelis to be in that corridor.
"Egypt has special responsibilities, and it must fulfill these responsibilities in order to put an end to the massacres. I believe that Egypt is capable of stopping these massacres in one day. Egypt can bring about a ceasefire and put an end to these massacres. It has special responsibilities. We are facing ongoing massacres against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip – not just with those missiles.
"I believe that the medicine and food on the Egyptian side of the border are enough to feed the people and provide them with medical treatment. The fact that they are incapable of delivering that food and medicine and as a result, people die of diseases, of skin rash, of respiratory tract infections, of hepatitis, and of malnutrition – I believe that this is another war crime perpetrated by the occupation, and Egypt must fulfill its duties in this respect as well."
