Turkish opposition leader Fethullah Gülen, interviewed by the Al-Arabiya network on August 18, said that the policy of President Erdoğan after the failed coup was "to eradicate any voice of opposition." "Once you have silenced all the voices of opposition, the masses become easy prey for deception and blind obedience," he said, mentioning Hitler and Saddam Hussein as leaders who were followed by the masses "like a herd of sheep."

Fethullah Gülen: There is an Arabic saying often used in Turkey, which goes: "The traitor fears the traitor." Since this act of treason [the failed coup] was carried out by their own people, you see them silencing any voice of opposition. They seize newspapers and TV channels and shut them down. They detain anybody who opposes their views, and drive away anyone they find to be decent or just, through deportation, imprisonment, or expulsion.
