Vancouver-based Islamic scholar Azhar Nasser discussed in a July 8, 2024 Shi'ite ceremony in Leicester, UK, Shi'ite religious leaders' support of the Palestinians. He emphasized that Shi'ite religious scholars supported the Palestinians even before the Islamic Revolution in Iran. Nasser recounted a story of a Shi'ite scholar who issued a fatwa to support Izz Al-Din Al-Qassam's "resistance efforts" in Mandatory Palestine in the 1930s, before Israel was established. He mentioned that Imam Khomeini, the leader of the Islamic Revolution, whom he called a "visionary," established the last Friday of Ramadan as Quds Day. Nasser added that the current leader of Iran Ali Khamenei has said: "Today the issue of Palestine is THE issue of the Islamic world." Azhar Nasser spoke at Masjid Al Husayn in Leicester, and his lecture was uploaded to MKSI Leicester on YouTube.

Azhar Nasser: "What I'd like to demonstrate tonight, brothers and sisters, is that our scholars, they were... they expressed solidarity with the people of Palestine long before the establishment of the Islamic Revolution in Iran. They were speaking out against the Zionists before it became trendy.

"The first example that I want to share with you goes back 88 years ago. 88 years ago... in 1936. A great mujtahid hailed from Jabal Amil in South Lebanon by the name of Sayyid Mohsin Al-Amin. He writes a fatwa in 1936. This is ten years before the establishment of Israel. He writes a fatwa when he was in Syria. And this fatwa was an appeal to the Muslim and to the Arab world to support the resistance effort that was led by a Sunni scholar – Sheikh Izz ad-Din al-Qassam.

"And then we go to Imam Khomeini. This visionary. On August 7, 1979, he takes it even a step further. He declares the last Friday in the month of Ramadan as Quds day. A day in which all Muslims unite and offer their support for the Palestinian struggle against the Zionists. He established it as a day to be remembered on an annual basis. A day in which Muslims showcase their unity and their strength. This was in 1979.

"And then you have Sayyid Al-Khamenei. I think you would struggle to find a scholar who has spoken more about the issue of Palestine than Sayyid Al-Khamenei. Among the many statements that he has uttered, he says among the following: 'Today, the issue of Palestine is the issue of the Islamic world.'"
