During a July 24, 2024 Washington D.C. protest, titled "Arrest Netanyahu," political activist Linda Sarsour told the crowd that they are the reason that Joe Biden is not on the top of the Democratic ticket for the presidential elections in November. She said that they are also the reason that Vice President and the Democratic Party's presumptive presidential nominee Kamala Harris did not preside over Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's speech to the joint session of Congress, and dozens of Congress members boycotted it. Sarsour said: "Let us be clear, our votes are still to be earned!"
Nihad Awad, executive director of CAIR – Council on American-Islamic Relations applauded members of Congress who boycotted Netanyahu's speech, mentioned VP Harris finding a way to "skip the criminal's speech," and said: "I challenge you not to give up on the elections in November. […] The uncommitted movement was able to sideline Biden." Participants in the protest removed the American flags flying at Union Station near Capitol Hill, burned an effigy of Netanyahu, and the American flag.
Nihad Awad: "Today, we applaud the members of Congress, who could have been in the House of People, applauding a war criminal, but they decided to boycott him. We appreciate these people and we thank them. If the Vice President Kamala Harris found a way to skip the criminal's speech, what about those people who are planning to go there? Shame on them!"
Crowd: "Shame!"
