On January 5, 2016, the hacker collective Anonymous hacked and shut down several Saudi government websites in protest of the recent execution of 47 people in the kingdom.
In September 2015, Anonymous launched #OpNimr targeting the Saudi government after it had sentenced 17-year-old Mohammed Al-Nimr to death by crucifixion.
