On January 21, 2016, it was reported that the Danish foreign ministry website had been hacked four months ago by hackers "likely supported by a country in the Middle East," who spent the time trying to steal data from the ministry without anyone having noticed the hack. The hackers installed a piece of malware into a computer at a Danish embassy via a file that was sent as an email attachment.

Ministry officials said that due to the lengthy time that had elapsed before the hack was noticed, it is possible that some data was indeed stolen.
