On August 18, 2023, a user of the Islamic State (ISIS)-operated encrypted Rocket.Chat server published posts asking for recommendations for secure chat applications and which apps are used by ISIS members. In response, another user, " who appears to be knowledgeable about IT, explained that back in 2016, ISIS's "technical office" instructed operatives not to use messaging apps such as WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger. He went on to explain that the group recommended the use of the encrypted app (Conversations), noting that a special version was developed at that time and distributed for personal use.
