On June 19, 2023, a user of the Islamic State (ISIS)-operated Rocket.Chat server published a post discussing how to obtain phone numbers to use for opening Twitter and Instagram accounts. He listed the sites "juicysms" and "smsvpa," which sell phone numbers to use in the verification process of opening social media accounts, noting that they are best because they are cheapest and accept cryptocurrency as payment. He added that sites which offer free phone numbers for verification purposes are not recommended, because they offer numbers which have been used before.
Describing how to use these services, the user recommended using a fake email address and a VPN, then immediately removing the associated phone number once the Twitter account is set up. Then, he said, users should turn on two-factor authentication, using browser extensions, rather than a phone number. Doing so ensures that Twitter will never against ask for a phone number, he stated.
Another user replied to the post, saying that Twitter does not require a phone number if you use the application rathe than the web browser version.
