In early October 2023, the Islamic State (ISIS) released several posters soliciting cryptocurrency donations to fund its operations. MEMRI JTTM, alongside the MEMRI Cyber & Jihad Lab (CJL), have long monitored jihadis' growing use of cryptocurrency, documenting how terrorist groups such as ISIS have adopted cryptocurrency as a fundraising method.
The following report supplements existing research, documenting ISIS's continued use of cryptocurrency for fundraising.
Islamic State Khurasan Province Solicits Monero Cryptocurrency Donations: "Please Donate For Waging Jihad With Wealth"
On October 2, 2023, a supporting media outlet for Islamic State Khurasan Province (ISKP) published a poster soliciting cryptocurrency donations. Depicting an armed jihadi, the poster urged supporters to "please donate for waging jihad with wealth," and cited Quran 61:10-11, which reads, in part: "Strive in the cause of Allah with your wealth and your lives. That is best for you, if only you knew."
It also featured a QR code for prospective donors; "Please donate with safe cryptocurrency Monero (XMR) for waging jihad with wealth and financing those who are waging the same with their lives," the poster read.
