On July 5, 2023, Meta (formerly Facebook) officially launched the social media app Threads, currently available in about 100 countries. Tens of millions of users have already signed up. The app is very similar to the Twitter platform. Jihadi elements that are active on social media are joining the new network and have already accumulated dozens of followers. Examples include Syrian and Palestinian jihadi operatives, Syrian jihadi social media outlets, and those affiliated with Iran-backed militias in Iraq, although some major jihadi organizations have also joined, such as the Somali Al-Qaeda affiliate Al-Shabab.
The new social network works in tandem with Instagram and is subject to the laws which prohibit the dissemination of terrorist content online.
